Political Issues and Elections
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd
There has been increasing discussion as to whether Australia should become independent from Great Britain. In 1999, election results showed a majority of Australians wanted to keep ties with Great Britain, although the vote was close and split almost 50/50. There continues to be discussion about separation from Great Britain.
Another current issue in Australia is the treatment of the Aborigines (the native people of Australia). In 2008, Australian Parliament apologized for the past wrongs committed against the Aboriginal people. Click here for audio of the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's apology speech.
